If you are eligible to participate in a retirement plan through your employer, consider starting participating now –– even if retirement seems far in the distance. Check with your employer to find out what kind of plan is available to you.
- 401(k) retirement plan for employees of private companies
- 403(b) retirement plan for teachers, churches, public hospitals and nonprofit organizations
- 457 retirement plan for state or local government employees
- Traditional pension plan: If you still have a traditional pension plan from your employer, count yourself lucky. But don't become complacent – that could change at any time.

If your employer doesn't offer an employee plan, there are other ways to begin saving and investing for your retirement through IRAs.
